“Wander broad, quiet ridge-tracks through Garrett’s cool forests, linking trailhead roads with gentle climbs.”
This easy out-and-back (or point-to-point if you arrange a shuttle) follows a designated snowmobile corridor through the high, forested ridges of Garrett County. At around 14 km (8.7 mi) with roughly 200 m (656 ft) of climbing, it’s a steady, low-stress walk on wide track—more like a quiet forest road/trail hybrid than a narrow footpath—linking the Cranesville Road side of Garrett State Forest with the Swallow Falls Road / Herrington Manor Road side near Herrington Manor State Park. (dnr.maryland.gov)
By car (most practical):
- The most reliable “known landmark” to navigate to is Herrington Manor State Park, commonly listed at 222 Herrington Lane, Oakland, MD 21550. From the park area, you can reach the Snaggy Mountain Road / Herrington Manor Road / Swallow Falls Road network that the snowmobile trail ties into. (sunshinewhispers.com)
- Another strong anchor landmark nearby is Swallow Falls State Park (also off Swallow Falls Road northwest of Oakland). The snowmobile trail map explicitly references Swallow Falls Rd and Herrington Manor Rd as access points. (dnr.maryland.gov)
Public transport: - There isn’t dependable public transit that drops you at the trailhead roads in this part of Garrett County. Plan on driving, or using a taxi/rideshare from Oakland/Deep Creek area if available (service can be limited and seasonal).
Expect a wide, graded corridor designed for winter motorized use—generally forgiving underfoot, with long straightaways and gentle curves. The climbing is spread out: you’ll gain elevation gradually over the first half, then roll along the ridge with small ups and downs before descending toward the far end.
Because it’s a snowmobile route, the “trail” often reads like: - packed dirt/gravel where it shares or parallels forest roads - doubletrack through mixed hardwoods and conifers - soft, damp sections where drainage is imperfect (more on that below)
Plan your pacing around distance rather than steepness: 14 km (8.7 mi) is the main challenge for newer hikers, not the grade.
Use HiiKER to keep track of junctions and to confirm you’re on the designated snowmobile alignment—this area has multiple intersecting forest roads and connector trails, and it’s easy to drift onto a parallel track if you’re chatting and not checking turns.
Look for: - posted trail markers/blazes where the corridor narrows - obvious “mainline” track where side roads peel off toward campsites or management roads
This route sits in the Garrett State Forest / Herrington Manor State Park landscape—classic Appalachian Plateau high country: cool, moist woods, ferny understory, and a mix of hardwood stands with pockets of evergreen.
Along the corridor you’ll commonly encounter:
- mixed oak and other hardwood forest typical of the state forest compartments in this area (dnr.maryland.gov)
- occasional openings and straighter road-like stretches where forest management access is needed
- seasonal wet spots and shallow drainages that cross the track
If you’re linking your day with nearby highlights, Swallow Falls State Park is close by and is known for dramatic river scenery and waterfalls along the Youghiogheny. (en.wikipedia.org)
Wildlife is typical of western Maryland’s big-woods habitat. You’re most likely to notice: - white-tailed deer sign (tracks, browse lines) - wild turkey in quieter morning hours - songbirds and woodpeckers in spring through fall
Ticks are a warm-season concern in Maryland—do a post-hike check, especially if you step off the main corridor into brushy edges.
In winter shoulder seasons (freeze/thaw), the wide track can turn into a mix of ice plates and mud, especially in shaded low spots.
