# Two-Day Kent Countryside & Coastal Hike

A two-day hike offering two very different experiences. Day one takes you through peaceful farmland, historic villages and apple orchards before reaching the coast. Day two is a complete contrast, following miles of coastline with expansive sea views, sandy beaches, harbours and plenty of history along the way.

## Day One – Farmland, Orchards & Countryside

The route opens into peaceful farmland, passing historic churches and following the gentle flow of the local river. Friendly locals and the occasional boat drifting along the riverbanks add to the tranquillity.

The route follows part of the Stour Valley Walk, although some public footpaths across farmland are poorly maintained and far from obvious. At times, you simply have to trust the route and keep going!

Late October brings the added delight of apple orchards, with glorious ripe red apples still hanging from the trees. Eventually, Reculver Towers appear on the horizon, signalling the approach of the coast and the end of the first day's countryside adventure, before settling in for an overnight camp at Hawk Place.

## Day Two – Coastal Trails, Harbours & History

A short coastal walk brings you to the Bouncing Bomb Café, where a warm welcome, friendly conversation and fascinating stories about 617 Squadron and the famous bouncing bomb await. Add a hearty breakfast and you're well fuelled for the miles ahead.

The trail continues along the coastline, with endless sea views and armies of offshore wind turbines on the horizon. Take every opportunity to wander along the sandy beaches, as they provide a welcome break from what can otherwise become a relentless stretch of concrete pathway. It's easy to see why this route is so popular with cyclists!

Ramsgate provides a welcome change of scenery, with its busy harbour and abundance of boats. Be warned, though: the pedestrian bridge across the harbour may be raised, with no obvious warning signs, meaning an unexpected detour around the docks.

The final stretch brings some welcome woodland walking before reaching Pegwell Bay. Here you'll discover an unexpected Viking longship, the fascinating story of a Second World War B-17 bomber crash in which all the crew survived, and plenty of opportunities for birdwatching before returning to the starting point.

## Overall

A really enjoyable two-day adventure offering plenty of variety. Day one is all about peaceful farmland, historic churches, apple orchards and charming countryside, while day two delivers miles of coastal walking, open sea views and fascinating historical landmarks.

A rewarding combination of countryside, coastline, local history and friendly encounters, with two very different days of walking rolled into one.
