Starting near Cheshire West and Chester, England, the Boots Green Grasslands Loop is a delightful 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) loop trail with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Great Barrow, which is easily accessible by both car and public transport.
For those driving, you can park at the Great Barrow Village Hall, which is a short walk from the trailhead. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is Chester, from where you can take a local bus to Great Barrow. The bus journey takes around 20 minutes, and the bus stop is just a few minutes' walk from the trailhead.

Around the 1 km (0.6 miles) mark, you’ll enter the expansive grasslands that give the trail its name. These meadows are home to a variety of wildflowers, especially vibrant in the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for butterflies and bees, which are abundant in this area.
As you continue, you’ll reach a small pond at approximately 3 km (1.9 miles). This is a great spot for birdwatching; you might see species such as mallards, herons, and even the occasional kingfisher. The surrounding trees provide a habitat for squirrels and other small mammals.
The region around Cheshire West and Chester is steeped in history. Near the 5 km (3.1 miles) point, you’ll come across an old Roman road, a reminder of the area’s ancient past. This section of the trail offers a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers who once traversed these lands.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail take you through a shaded woodland area, offering a cool respite on warmer days. The path here is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. As you exit the woods, you’ll find yourself back in Great Barrow, where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest at one of the local pubs or cafes.
