The trail begins near Lydford, a village known for its historical significance, including the Lydford Castle and Saxon town defenses. As you set off, you'll initially follow a well-marked path that gradually ascends towards Brat Tor.
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Brat Tor, also known as Widgery Cross. This granite tor is topped with a cross erected in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The views from Brat Tor are expansive, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding moorland.
Continuing on, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards Great Nodden, which you'll reach around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark.
