Activity types
The Cornwall Coast Path is 352.96 km long with 13,773 m of climbing, so it is a substantial multi-day route rather than a short coastal walk. Strong long-distance hikers often break a route of this scale into roughly two to three weeks, depending on daily mileage, weather, and how many stopovers are built in around places such as Newquay, St Ives, Penzance, and Falmouth.
The Cornwall Coast Path is rated medium, but the total ascent of 13,773 m makes it tougher than the distance alone suggests. Much of the route follows rugged cliff paths with repeated steep descents and climbs, and sections in Cornwall are known for compacted earth, sand, rock, and uneven coastal ground rather than long flat stretches.
Dogs are allowed on the South West Coast Path, which includes the Cornwall Coast Path section, provided they do not disturb livestock, wildlife, or other walkers. On beaches with seasonal dog restrictions, the path can still be crossed with a dog, but local control rules can change from beach to beach along the Cornwall coast.
Spring through early fall is generally the most practical season for the Cornwall Coast Path, with March to September often giving the best balance of longer daylight and milder conditions. Cornwall’s coast can still bring wind, rain, and slippery ground in any month, and exposed cliff sections in West Cornwall can feel notably harsher in unsettled weather.
Yes. The Cornwall Coast Path follows the South West Coast Path corridor through a county with useful rail and bus links, making section hiking realistic from towns such as Newquay, St Ives, Penzance, and other coastal settlements. Public transport is especially helpful for day walks or for linking trail stages without returning to the same trailhead by car.
Yes. The Cornwall Coast Path is the Cornwall section of the South West Coast Path National Trail, following Cornwall’s coastline through many of the county’s best-known headlands, coves, and harbor towns. Government coastal access work in Cornwall has also improved and formalized long stretches of this route along the county’s coast.
