“Explore the 9 km Hucken Tor Loop in Dartmoor, blending natural beauty, history, and moderate hiking challenge.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Merrivale in Devon, England, the Hucken Tor Loop is a captivating 9 km (5.6 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Merrivale, which is easily accessible via the A386 road. There is a small parking area near the Merrivale Quarry, which serves as a convenient starting point. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Tavistock, where you can catch a bus to Merrivale. The bus service is relatively frequent, but it's advisable to check the latest schedules.
The trail begins near the Merrivale Quarry, a site of historical significance due to its past as a granite quarry. As you start your hike, you'll immediately notice the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park, characterized by its open moorlands and granite tors.
Approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the Merrivale Stone Rows, an ancient Bronze Age site featuring a series of standing stones and burial cairns. This archaeological site offers a glimpse into the region's prehistoric past and is one of the most well-preserved stone rows in Dartmoor.
Continuing along the trail, you'll reach Hucken Tor around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark. This granite outcrop provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding moorlands. It's a perfect spot for a short break and some photography. The elevation gain to this point is gradual, making it a manageable climb for most hikers.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. During your hike, you may encounter Dartmoor ponies grazing freely, a variety of bird species, and an array of wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for the rare Dartford warbler and the skylark, both of which are native to this region.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on course.
As you loop back towards Merrivale, the trail descends gently, offering more scenic views of the moorlands and the occasional glimpse of the River Walkham. The final 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively flat, making for a pleasant end to your hike.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
