“Explore Dartmoor’s beauty and history on the 9 km Kestor Rocks Walk from Chagford.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Chagford in Devon, England, the Kestor Rocks Walk is a delightful 9 km (approximately 5.6 miles) out-and-back trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 300 meters (about 984 feet). This trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and historical richness of Dartmoor National Park.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Chagford, which is well-connected by road. If you prefer public transport, the nearest major train station is Exeter St Davids. From Exeter, you can take a bus to Chagford, with services running regularly. Once in Chagford, the trailhead is a short walk from the village center.
The trail begins near the village of Chagford, a charming settlement known for its historic buildings and vibrant community. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself surrounded by the rolling hills and open moorland that characterize Dartmoor.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the first significant landmark: the Scorhill Stone Circle. This ancient site, dating back to the Bronze Age, consists of a ring of standing stones and offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's prehistoric past. The circle is one of the largest and best-preserved on Dartmoor, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Continuing on, the trail gradually ascends, offering panoramic views of the surrounding moorland. At around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll reach Kestor Rock, the trail's namesake. This granite tor provides a perfect spot to rest and take in the breathtaking scenery. The views from Kestor Rock are expansive, offering a clear sightline across the moors and, on a clear day, even as far as the distant tors of Dartmoor.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies, a breed native to the area, grazing on the moorland. Birdwatchers will also be delighted by the variety of species, including skylarks, buzzards, and the occasional peregrine falcon. The flora is equally diverse, with heather, gorse, and wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape, particularly in late summer.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always wise to carry a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. Weather on Dartmoor can be unpredictable, so come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. The terrain can be uneven and boggy in places, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
Dartmoor is steeped in history, and this trail is no exception. In addition to the Scorhill Stone Circle, the area around Kestor Rock is dotted with remnants of ancient settlements and burial mounds, offering a tangible connection to the past. The landscape itself has been shaped by centuries of human activity, from prehistoric farming to medieval tin mining.
As you make your way back towards Chagford, take the time to enjoy the serene beauty of the moorland. The return journey offers a different perspective on the landscape, with the changing light and weather conditions providing a constantly shifting backdrop.
This hike is a wonderful way to experience the natural and historical richness of Dartmoor, offering a moderate challenge and plenty of rewards along the way.
