Dovestone Circular via Greenfield Brook and Chew Reservoir

This 16 km circular hike around Dovestone Reservoir combines reservoir-side trails, rugged gritstone scenery, and remote moorland into one of the most rewarding walks on the edge of the Peak District. Starting at Dovestone Reservoir, the route follows the shoreline before passing Yeoman Hey Reservoir and Greenfield Reservoir. It then climbs onto the high moors, visiting the distinctive Indian’s Head rock formation, the dramatic Ashway Rocks, and the open plateau surrounding Chew Reservoir, the highest reservoir in England.

From Chew Reservoir, the route follows sections of the historic Chew Road before descending across Saddleworth Moor. Along the way, you’ll pass the site of the B-29 Overexposed crash memorial, cross wild peat moorland, and enjoy sweeping views across the reservoirs, surrounding hills, and the Tame Valley. The final section returns to Dovestone Reservoir on quieter tracks, completing a varied circuit through one of the South Pennines’ most scenic landscapes.
