Trail Highlights

Cheddar Gorge

As you begin your hike, you'll quickly encounter the awe-inspiring Cheddar Gorge, one of England's most iconic natural landmarks. The gorge is the largest in the UK, with towering limestone cliffs that rise up to 137 meters (450 feet). The initial ascent is steep, so be prepared for a challenging start. The views from the top are breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels.

Wildlife and Flora

The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for peregrine falcons soaring above the cliffs and a variety of wildflowers, including rare species like Cheddar pinks. The area is also home to goats and sheep, which help maintain the unique landscape by grazing on the vegetation.

Historical Significance

Cheddar Gorge is not just a natural wonder; it has significant historical importance. The area is famous for the discovery of Cheddar Man, Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, dating back over 9,000 years. As you hike, you'll pass by Gough's Cave, where the remains were found. The cave is open to the public and offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. There are some steep sections, particularly during the initial climb and descent, so take your time and use trekking poles if needed.

Waterfall and Caves

Midway through the loop, you'll come across a charming waterfall, a perfect spot for a short break. The trail then leads you to the entrance of the Cheddar Caves, a series of stunning underground chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. While the caves require a separate entry fee, they are well worth a visit for their natural beauty and historical artifacts.

Final Stretch

The final part of the loop takes you through lush woodlands and open fields, gradually descending back towards the village of Cheddar. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene landscape and perhaps spot some local wildlife.
