To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Mendham, which is accessible via the A143 road. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Diss, about 15 km (9 miles) away. From Diss, you can take a local bus or taxi to Mendham.
The trail begins near the village center of Mendham, a quaint settlement with historical roots dating back to the Domesday Book. As you set off, you'll traverse through a mix of open fields, woodlands, and picturesque countryside, typical of the Suffolk landscape.
The first section of the trail takes you from Mendham to Metfield, covering approximately 8 km (5 miles). Along this stretch, you'll pass through lush meadows and ancient woodlands. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The path is well-marked, but it's advisable to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on track.
Upon reaching Metfield, take some time to explore this historic village. Metfield is known for its medieval church, St. John the Baptist, which dates back to the 14th century. The village also played a significant role during World War II, serving as a base for the USAAF. You might notice remnants of this history as you walk through the village.
Leaving Metfield, the trail continues towards Withersdale Street, covering another 4 km (2.5 miles). This section is relatively flat and takes you through more agricultural land and small patches of woodland. The tranquility of the Suffolk countryside is particularly evident here, offering a peaceful hiking experience.
The final leg of the loop brings you back to Mendham, covering the remaining 4 km (2.5 miles). As you approach Mendham, you'll cross the River Waveney, a serene waterway that adds to the scenic beauty of the trail. The gentle ascent back to the village provides a nice cool-down after your hike.
