Birkhouse Moor, Helvellyn and Whiteside Loop

Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Birkhouse Moor, Helvellyn, and Whiteside Loop is a 14 km (8.7 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 meters (3280 feet). Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Glenridding, a village located on the southern shore of Ullswater. There is a car park in Glenridding where you can leave your vehicle. Trail Overview

The trail begins in Glenridding and initially follows a well-marked path towards Birkhouse Moor. The ascent to Birkhouse Moor is gradual, offering stunning views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. After approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) and an elevation gain of 300 meters (984 feet), you will reach the summit of Birkhouse Moor.

Helvellyn Ascent

From Birkhouse Moor, the trail continues towards Helvellyn, one of the most famous peaks in the Lake District. The path becomes steeper and more rugged as you approach the summit. After another 3 km (1.9 miles) and an additional 400 meters (1312 feet) of elevation gain, you will reach the summit of Helvellyn. At 950 meters (3117 feet), Helvellyn offers panoramic views of the Lake District, including Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, two famous ridges that attract many hikers.

Whiteside Descent

After enjoying the views from Helvellyn, the trail descends towards Whiteside. This section is less steep but requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. The descent to Whiteside is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) with a drop of 200 meters (656 feet). Whiteside offers a different perspective of the surrounding landscape, with views towards the western fells.

Return to Glenridding

The final section of the loop takes you back to Glenridding. The path is well-trodden and descends gradually, making for a pleasant end to the hike. This section is about 6 km (3.7 miles) with a descent of 100 meters (328 feet). Along the way, you will pass through lush meadows and woodlands, offering opportunities to spot local wildlife such as red squirrels and various bird species.

Historical Significance

The region around Helvellyn has a rich history. The area was once home to lead and zinc mining operations, remnants of which can still be seen along the trail. Additionally, Helvellyn has inspired many poets and writers, including William Wordsworth, who often wrote about the beauty of the Lake District.
