“A gentle West Cork walk descending to Inchigeelagh.”
Dereen Loop Walk is a short, easy point-to-point outing in the hills above Inchigeelagh, covering 6.5 km / 4.0 mi with 75 m / 246 ft of climbing and 126 m / 413 ft of descent. The route reaches a highest point of 184 m / 604 ft and is best suited to walkers looking for a gentle ramble of about 1.5 hours through quiet upland countryside before finishing at Inchigeelagh Bridge on the River Lee.
Although its name suggests a loop, this walk is mapped here as a point-to-point route. From the higher ground west of Inchigeelagh it works across open hillside and local tracks before descending steadily towards the village. The modest ascent and overall downhill trend make it a relaxed walk, with the broadest views likely to come on the more open upper section before the route drops towards the bridge and the valley floor.
The finish is at Inchigeelagh Bridge in Inchigeelagh, a village on the R584 between Macroom and Bantry, about 15 km / 9.3 mi southwest of Macroom. Inchigeelagh is served by daily bus services between Ballingeary and Macroom, which can help with a car shuttle for a point-to-point walk. Drivers should plan around the village approach roads and arrange parking considerately near the finish or a separate lift to the start.
The walk finishes in a part of West Cork shaped by the River Lee and the nearby waters of Lough Allua. Inchigeelagh sits beside the Lee, while Lough Allua lies just to the west and forms part of the same river system. The surrounding area is valued for its scenic setting, with the R584 through Inchigeelagh recognised as a scenic route, so even a short walk here has a strong sense of the wider Lee Valley landscape.
With an easy grade and a distance of 6.5 km / 4.0 mi, this is a manageable walk for most reasonably prepared hikers, but it still calls for sturdy footwear. Expect a mix of minor roads, tracks and uneven ground, with wetter patches possible after rain on the higher sections and approaches into the valley. Because the route is point-to-point rather than circular, it is worth sorting transport before setting out and carrying HiiKER navigation for the handiest line on the ground.
