Out and Back
“A gentle railway greenway linking Midleton with the coast.”
The Midleton to Youghal Greenway is an easy out-and-back route in County Cork covering 45.8 km / 28.4 mi with just 97 m / 318 ft of ascent and the same on the return. Starting and finishing at McSweeney Terrace in Midleton, it makes for a long but gentle trail that suits a two-day outing or a shorter there-and-back section. The highest point is only 24 m / 80 ft, so the route stays broadly level throughout.
This is a linear greenway walked as an out-and-back, so the return journey retraces the same corridor back to Midleton. The trail has an easy character, with long straight sections, shallow gradients and a clear sense of direction. With modest climbing spread across the full distance, it is more a test of time on the trail than of steep ground.
Midleton is the practical access point for the walk. Midleton railway station is the eastern terminus of the Cork commuter rail line, with services from Cork and intermediate stations on the Mallow to Cobh and Midleton route. Bus links also serve Midleton and Youghal, including Route 260 between Cork and Ardmore via Youghal, which can be useful for walkers planning a shorter one-way section before returning by public transport.
The route runs through the low-lying East Cork countryside between Midleton and Youghal, linking inland farmland with the coast at the far end. Its railway heritage shapes the experience, with a broad, direct line through the landscape rather than a hill path or rough country track.
With an easy grading and very little elevation change, this is a straightforward route for walkers who are comfortable covering distance. The main challenge is the overall length of 45.8 km / 28.4 mi, which is why it is best approached as about two days on foot rather than a short stroll. The low point-to-point variation and former railway formation make it a good choice when steady, uncomplicated walking is the priority.
Because the route begins and ends in Midleton, walkers can tailor the day to suit their plans, turning back early or continuing all the way towards Youghal before retracing their steps. HiiKER navigation is useful here, especially for judging turnaround points and daily distance. Even on an easy greenway, the full route calls for the same preparation as any long-distance walk: enough food and water, layers for exposed sections, and a plan for transport if splitting the trail into shorter stages.
Days planned around your pace, with somewhere to stay each night.
