“A short hill walk with woodland, old stones and wide Foyle views.”
Grania’s Gap Loop is a medium walk in east Inishowen that packs a lot into a short outing: 7.0 km / 4.3 mi of lanes, tracks and hillside walking with 256 m / 840 ft of climbing. Although its name suggests a circuit, this HiiKER route is a point-to-point walk from Whitehill near Muff to the road at L1891, reaching a highest point of 245 m / 803 ft and taking about 2 hours at a steady pace.
The route climbs above the lowlands around Muff for broad views over Lough Foyle and the surrounding coastal landscape. It also links with the Derry–Quigley’s Point Greenway, so the start is close to a larger walking and cycling corridor in this part of Donegal.
From Whitehill, the walk heads uphill on a mix of quiet local roads and rougher walking ground before finishing farther west. The climbing is steady rather than extreme, but the route gains height quickly enough to feel more substantial than the distance suggests. With 120 m / 394 ft of descent overall, it is not a full return to the starting level, so walkers should plan for a finish away from the trailhead.
The higher section follows open hillside where the views widen out, then drops back towards the finish. This is a good route for walkers who want a short hill outing as well as scenery.
The standout views are across Lough Foyle and the coast beyond, especially as the route reaches its upper ground.
Local points of interest include a ruined homestead and the Carnamoyle standing stone, giving the route a strong sense of place despite its modest length.
The start near Muff is easiest to reach by car, and the wider area is also served by the cross-border greenway between Derry, Muff and Quigley’s Point. For public transport, Muff is served by TFI Local Link services in Inishowen, and Bus Éireann’s county services connect Donegal with larger towns elsewhere in the county, though not directly to the trailhead itself. Because this HiiKER route is point-to-point, it is worth arranging a lift, using two cars, or planning a road walk or greenway link back if needed.
This is a medium walk with enough ascent to demand reasonable fitness. The combination of local roads, gravelly sections, woodland ground and open hillside means footwear with good grip is the sensible choice, especially after wet weather. The route is short at 7.0 km / 4.3 mi, but the 256 m / 840 ft of ascent makes it more than an easy stroll.
The highest point is only 245 m / 803 ft, so this is not a mountain day, but the exposed upper ground can still feel open to wind and rain. Walkers should carry an extra layer and be prepared for uneven surfaces.
This part of Inishowen combines farmland, wooded pockets and open slopes above the Foyle. The connection to the greenway also places the trail within a wider network of active travel routes that link communities across this border landscape.
