“A peaceful woodland loop with lakeside views across Lough Corrib.”
Ard na Gaoithe - Ardnageeha loop is a short, easy woodland circuit in County Galway, covering 2.2 km / 1.4 mi with 38 m / 125 ft of climbing and a highest point of 37 m / 122 ft. The route forms a loop and takes about 30 minutes, making it a good choice for a gentle walk or a quick outing with views over Lough Corrib.
This is a compact loop through Ard na Gaoithe Woods, with a generally undemanding profile and only modest ups and downs. The walk begins near the car park, follows an elevated path above the lakeshore, then loops back through mixed woodland. Although short, it packs in changing views between the trees and the water’s edge.
The standout feature is the position above Lough Corrib. There are open views across the lake and its islands, and a seating area by the shore for a pause. The setting combines lakeside scenery with sheltered forest, so the walk feels varied despite its small scale.
Drivers can start from the car park at the trailhead. For public transport, Cong is served by Bus Éireann route 422, which links the village with Headford and Castlebar.
The woods include a mix of broadleaf and conifer species, including ash, sycamore, beech, Norway spruce and larch, with alder and willow in wetter ground near the lake edge. That mix of dry woodland and damp lakeside habitat gives the route a richer natural feel than its short distance suggests.
With its easy grading and short length, this route suits most walkers looking for a relaxed outing rather than a demanding hike. Paths can be damp in wet weather, especially near the shore and in low-lying sections, so sturdy footwear is still worthwhile. As with any lakeside woodland walk, it is best to keep to the marked trail and leave no trace.
