“A short island climb to a historic viewpoint above Knightstown.”
This medium point-to-point walk on Valentia Island links Knightstown with the slopes and summit area of Kilbeg Mountain before finishing near Cullum's Cup. At 4.9 km / 3.0 mi with 170 m / 558 ft of climbing, it is a short outing but it packs in a steady ascent, open hillside and wide coastal views. Most walkers will want about 1 hour 15 minutes.
The route starts on Altazamuth Walk in Knightstown and climbs inland toward Kilbeg Mountain, the high point of the walk at 171 m / 561 ft. Near the end, Cullum's Cup stands on the hillside above the harbour, with far-reaching views over Valentia Island and the Iveragh coast.
The start is in Knightstown, the main village on Valentia Island, where the island car ferry arrives from Renard Point in season and where the island is also reached by road via the bridge at Portmagee. Knightstown is served by Local Link Kerry route 287A, which connects the village with Chapeltown, Portmagee and Cahersiveen.
For drivers, Knightstown has public parking by the seafront and around the village, making it the practical place to leave a car before setting out. Because this is a point-to-point walk, it is worth planning the return in advance.
From Altazamuth Walk, the route leaves the waterfront behind and heads uphill through the edge of Knightstown before striking out across the lower slopes of Kilbeg Mountain. The climb is the main effort of the day, and although the distance is modest, the ascent gives the walk its medium grading.
Kilbeg Mountain comes 4.1 km / 2.5 mi from the start and reaches 168 m / 551 ft on the route, just below the walk's highest ground. From there the route continues toward Cullum's Cup, finishing near the western side of the looped hillside section rather than back in the village.
Cullum's Cup is the standout landmark on this walk. The exposed hillside setting gives it a real sense of arrival after the climb.
The views are the reward for the effort. From the upper slopes there are broad outlooks over Knightstown, Valentia Harbour and the Iveragh Peninsula, with the island's mix of sea, headlands and scattered settlements spread out below.
This is a short but fairly punchy walk with a sustained climb for its length. The route mixes village approach sections with hill tracks and open ground, so sturdy footwear is the better choice, especially after wet weather. The highest point is only 171 m / 561 ft, but the exposed upper ground can feel much bigger when Atlantic winds are blowing.
With 170 m / 558 ft of ascent and 99 m / 325 ft of descent over 4.9 km / 3.0 mi, it suits walkers who are comfortable on uneven terrain and short uphill efforts.
Knightstown is one of Valentia Island's best-known historic settlements, and the walk begins beside one of its small local landmarks, the Altazamuth Stone. The village itself remains the island's main hub, so the route starts with a strong sense of place before quickly moving into open hillside.
That contrast is part of what makes this walk memorable: a few minutes from the harbour and village streets, the route is already climbing into a more exposed landscape above the coast.
