Loop
“A gentle forest loop with quiet woodland and easy walking near Monaghan.”
This easy loop makes a short woodland outing on the edge of Monaghan, covering 2.3 km / 1.4 mi with only 14 m / 46 ft of climbing. Most walkers will be around in about half an hour, and the gentle profile, with a highest point of 93 m / 306 ft, keeps it firmly in stroll rather than hike territory.
The route starts on Monaghan Road and circles through forest close to Lisnaspeenan, giving a compact taste of County Monaghan’s rolling wooded landscape without any long or steep effort.
The line shown here swings south through the trees before curving back north, staying low and easy throughout. Lisnaspeenan, marked at 120 m and about 0.6 km from the start, sits nearby as the local high ground, though the walked route itself remains below that summit.
This is a good choice for a relaxed leg-stretcher, a family walk, or an easy add-on to a day in the wider forest. With only 13 m / 43 ft of descent and 14 m / 46 ft of ascent, the route avoids any sustained climbing. Walkers should still expect typical forest-surface variation underfoot, especially after wet weather, and sturdy shoes are sensible even on a short outing.
The walk begins from the Monaghan Road side of the forest near Monaghan town. Rossmore Forest Park lies roughly 3 km south of Monaghan and is reached from the R189, where there is a car park and visitor facilities including toilets and picnic areas. For anyone building a longer day out, the wider park has several other signed walking trails as well as estate features and lakes.
The surrounding forest forms part of the old Rossmore estate, a large historic parkland landscape on the outskirts of Monaghan. Elsewhere in the forest there are features such as the castle site, a walled garden, a fish hatchery, reservoir, and a long avenue of yew trees, which add extra interest for anyone exploring beyond this short loop.
Because the route is short, it works well as an all-year walk when daylight is limited, but it is best enjoyed with enough time to wander rather than rush. Dogs are allowed on a lead on the Fairfield Loop. HiiKER navigation is useful here for keeping to the correct loop among the wider network of forest tracks and trails.
