“A short rural loop with grassy paths and open views.”
The Dohern Loop Trail is an easy 4.9 km / 3.1 mi circuit in County Sligo, climbing to 145 m / 476 ft with 91 m / 299 ft of ascent. Allow about 1 hour for the full loop. It mixes quiet local roads with a grassy hillside path, making it a short outing with a distinctly rural feel and broad views from the higher ground around Dohern Hill.
This is a loop route starting near the minor roads around Dohern and Chaffpool. The waymarked trail is normally followed anti-clockwise, beginning on a small road before rising onto an old grass path. A short spur leads through a kissing gate to the highest point, where there is a bench and open views across the surrounding countryside. The trail then returns to the main line, continues over grassy ground, and finishes on minor roads back to the start.
Although short, the walk is not entirely flat. The climb is steady rather than severe, and the mix of country lanes and uneven grass path means sturdy footwear is still useful, especially after wet weather. With 83 m / 272 ft of descent as well as 91 m / 299 ft of climbing, it feels like a gentle hill walk rather than a level roadside stroll.
The trailhead lies on a minor road, with limited roadside parking at the start. Drivers approaching continue uphill to the trail sign, then park considerately.
The high point of the walk is Dohern Hill, a domed limestone hill with wide views over the surrounding countryside.
The old path on the hill is known as Bóithrín Dearg, or Red Path. That sense of local history gives this short walk more depth than its modest distance might suggest.
