“A gentle riverside walk linking Cahir Castle with the Swiss Cottage.”
This easy point-to-point walk follows the Suir Blueway from Cahir Castle to the Swiss Cottage, covering 3.1 km / 1.9 mi in about 40 minutes. With just 35 m / 115 ft of climbing, 47 m / 154 ft of descent and a highest point of 62 m / 203 ft, it is a gentle riverside outing that links two of Cahir’s best-known historic sights.
The walk starts in Cahir and heads south along the River Suir on a designated path towards the Swiss Cottage. The line of the route stays close to the river for much of the way, making this a short, straightforward outing rather than a demanding hike. As a point-to-point route, walkers should plan how they will return from the finish.
Cahir Castle stands on a rocky island in the River Suir in the middle of town, giving the opening stretch a strong sense of place. At the far end, the Swiss Cottage is an ornamental cottage associated with John Nash. The cottage sits in wooded grounds above the river and was designed as a picturesque retreat for leisure and entertaining.
Cahir is served by rail, and the station is on Church Street in the town. Bus services also stop in Cahir, making the town a practical place to begin before walking out to the Swiss Cottage. At the finish, there is parking on site.
This is a short easy walk suited to a relaxed pace. The modest elevation changes and low high point mean the route is more about enjoying the river corridor and heritage setting than tackling steep ground. Comfortable walking shoes are usually enough, though the path can feel damper underfoot after wet weather.
