“A gentle riverside stroll into historic Carrick-on-Suir.”
Suir Blueway - Deerpark to Carrick on Suir is a short, easy point-to-point walk beside the River Suir in County Tipperary. The route covers 2.9 km / 1.8 mi with only 6 m / 20 ft of climbing, reaches a highest point of 10 m / 34 ft, and takes about 35 minutes at a steady pace. It is a gentle riverside outing that works well for a relaxed stroll into Carrick-on-Suir.
This section links Deerpark with Carrick-on-Suir along the Suir Blueway corridor, following a flat line close to the river. With almost no ascent, it is better suited to easy walking than to anyone looking for a strenuous hike. Because it is a point-to-point route, walkers should plan whether to return the same way or arrange transport at the far end.
The eastern end of the walk is in Carrick-on-Suir on Clonmel Road, making it the simplest access point for most walkers. Carrick-on-Suir has a railway station for arrivals by public transport. Drivers can use Carrick-on-Suir as the practical base for access to the trail and then arrange a lift or second vehicle for the Deerpark end if walking it one way.
The walk stays close to the River Suir and forms part of the wider Suir Blueway between Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir. Near the Carrick end, Ormond Castle is a standout landmark. Set by the river, it is the finest example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland.
Expect an easy-going outing on low-lying riverside ground, with a maximum height of just 10 m / 34 ft. The short distance and minimal climb make ordinary walking shoes suitable in good conditions, though the riverside setting means the surface can feel exposed to wet weather. As with any point-to-point blueway walk, it is worth checking HiiKER for navigation and planning the return before setting out.
Carrick-on-Suir has strong links to the river and to Ormond Castle, which stands on Castle Street near the town centre. The castle combines an earlier medieval riverside stronghold with a Tudor manor house and remains one of the town’s best-known historic sites, adding extra interest for anyone turning this short walk into a longer visit to Carrick-on-Suir.
