“A gentle riverside greenway walk through the quiet Suir valley.”
Suir Blueway - Kilsheelan to Deerpark is an easy point-to-point walk of 8.7 km / 5.4 mi along the River Suir corridor in County Tipperary. With just 13 m / 43 ft of climbing and a highest point of 15 m / 49 ft, it is a gentle outing that suits a relaxed pace, taking about 2 hours for most walkers. The route links the riverside around Kilsheelan with Deerpark on the Clonmel side, following the flat greenway section of the wider Suir Blueway.
This is a straightforward linear walk on the Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir greenway section of the Suir Blueway. The path runs beside the River Suir on a former towpath corridor, so the gradient stays very mild throughout and the walking is more about steady forward progress than climbing. Because it is a point-to-point route, walkers will need to plan transport at either end or retrace their steps if they want a longer day out.
The western end is at Kilsheelan, a riverside village east of Clonmel, while Deerpark lies on the same greenway corridor closer to Clonmel. By road, the route sits close to the N24, making it easy to reach from either Clonmel or Carrick-on-Suir. Public transport is practical too: Bus Éireann Route 55 serves both Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir.
The walk stays low beside the river, with a broad, open feel rather than a mountain or woodland character. Around Kilsheelan, the setting is shaped by the River Suir and the village’s long riverside relationship with the old towpath. The surrounding countryside gives glimpses toward the foothills to the south and the wider Suir valley, adding interest without making the route demanding.
Underfoot, this is a gentle greenway walk with very little ascent, making it one of the easier outings in the area. The modest distance and almost level profile mean it works well for walkers looking for a short half-day route rather than a strenuous hike. Even so, it is still worth bringing waterproof layers and suitable walking shoes, as riverside paths can feel exposed in wet or windy weather.
The route forms part of the wider Suir Blueway Tipperary, a longer recreation corridor that combines walking and cycling sections with paddling trails along the River Suir.
