“A steep mountain link above Lough Dan.”
This is a short but steep mountain access route in County Wicklow. Although it covers only 0.9 km / 0.6 mi, it climbs 84 m / 276 ft to a highest point of 349 m / 1,146 ft, so it feels much tougher than the distance suggests. The line is best treated as a direct link onto higher open hillside rather than a leisurely walk, and the difficult grading reflects the sharp ascent and exposed upland setting.
The route begins at Kanturk Access near Wicklow and follows a short point-to-point line uphill from the roadside into the mountainside. Because the start and finish sit at the same mapped access point, this works best as an approach section to longer hill days above Lough Dan. Hikers gain height quickly and can expect a brief but sustained climb that takes about 19 minutes at a steady pace.
Despite its modest length, this is not a casual stroll. The climb is concentrated into a very short distance, so the gradient is the main challenge. Strong boots, weatherproof layers and confident footing are sensible here, especially as the surrounding Wicklow uplands are open, exposed and can be wet underfoot. This access line is most suitable for walkers who are already prepared for mountain terrain and who can continue safely beyond the end of the marked approach.
The access point lies in the Lough Dan and Old Bridge area, reached by minor mountain roads. Public transport serves Wicklow Town, but there is no direct mountain service to this access point, making a car or pre-arranged lift the most practical option for most walkers.
This route sits above Lough Dan. The setting is classic upland Wicklow: open mountain flank, broad views, and quick access to higher ground. Nearby Glenmacnass is a well-known scenic valley in the county, adding to the sense that this short climb is really a gateway into a much bigger mountain landscape.
Because this is an access route rather than a full low-level walk, it is worth planning for what comes next beyond the top of the climb. Carry enough food, water and spare layers for a longer outing if continuing onto the open hill. Good visibility makes navigation easier, but the surrounding mountain ground can quickly become more committing than the short distance at the start suggests, so this route is best approached with proper hillwalking preparation and HiiKER navigation ready to hand.
