Out and Back
A short and scenic coastal walk between Tower Bay in Portrane and Donabate Beach. This easy out-and-back route follows the coastline along good gravel paths, grassy sections, cliffside views, and beachside trails.
I started the walk from Tower Bay Car Park in Portrane, but it can also be started from Donabate Beach Car Park beside the Shoreline Hotel. The route is around 3.65 km with very little elevation gain, making it a great option for beginners, casual walkers, families with older children, or anyone looking for a short coastal walk near Dublin.
Starting from Portrane, the walk begins with lovely cliff views and passes close to Evan’s Tower, a 19th-century tower built by Sophie Evans in memory of her husband. The route then continues towards Lady’s Beach, where you get beautiful views across the sea towards Ireland’s Eye and Howth on a clear day.
One of the nicest sections of the walk follows a long stone wall near the coast. You can walk on either side of the wall: the cliffside path is narrower and gives the best sea views, while the inland side is wider, well maintained, and set farther back from the edge.
The walk continues towards Donabate Beach and the Shoreline Hotel, where you can stop for a coffee, ice cream, or even a quick swim before returning the same way to Portrane.
This is an easy walk overall, but take care near cliff edges, especially in windy weather or if walking with children or dogs.
