The route follows a combination of local footpaths, including Wolfsteeg and the Gradie Noordmanpad, both well-marked and maintained.

Landmarks and Points of Interest

One of the highlights early in the walk is Hessumse Strand, a sandy riverside area popular for its tranquil views over the Vecht. The riverbanks here are dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, and you may spot herons, kingfishers, or even deer in the early morning or late afternoon.

Continuing along Wolfsteeg, the landscape transitions into mixed woodland, where ancient oaks and beeches provide shade and shelter for a variety of birdlife. Listen for woodpeckers and watch for squirrels darting across the path. The Gradie Noordmanpad section is named after a local naturalist, and interpretive signs along the way share insights into the flora and fauna of the region.

Uitkijktoren de Stokle

At roughly the halfway point, you’ll reach Uitkijktoren de Stokle, a modern wooden observation tower. Climb the sturdy steps for panoramic views over the Vecht valley and surrounding farmland. On clear days, you can see as far as the Sallandse Heuvelrug in the distance. The tower is a great spot for a rest and a picnic, with benches nearby.

Nature and Wildlife

The area is part of the Vecht river landscape, known for its biodiversity. Depending on the season, you might encounter grazing sheep or Highland cattle, which help maintain the open character of the meadows. The wetlands attract a variety of waterfowl, and the adjacent forests are home to foxes, badgers, and a rich array of insects and butterflies.

Historical Context

The region around Hessum and Dalfsen has a long history of settlement, with evidence of habitation dating back to prehistoric times. The Vecht river was historically a vital trade route, and the surrounding fields have been farmed for centuries. Some of the paths you’ll walk, like Wolfsteeg, follow ancient routes once used by farmers and traders moving between villages.

The loop brings you back to Hessumse Strand, where you can relax by the water or enjoy a snack at one of the nearby picnic spots. Facilities are limited, so bring water and any food you’ll need for the day.
