Activity types
The Alex Knob Track is usually done as a full-day out-and-back hike. DOC describes it as a challenging day hike, with about 2 hours to Rata Lookout, another hour to Christmas Lookout, and then a further climb to Alex Knob before returning the same way. With 16.47 km of distance and 1,113 m of ascent, it is not a short walk.
The Alex Knob Track starts from the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat carpark on the Franz Josef Glacier access road. From Franz Josef/Waiau township, the route goes south across the Waiho bridge, then left onto the glacier access road for about 2 km, with the track signposted on the right-hand side.
The Alex Knob Track is an extra difficult hike with 16.47 km of distance and 1,113 m of elevation gain. DOC classifies it as a challenging day hike for experienced, well-equipped hikers, with a steep gradient and a long sustained climb from forest to subalpine terrain.
The Alex Knob Track climbs steadily through lowland forest before reaching Rata Lookout, then continues to Christmas Lookout and higher into subalpine scrub, alpine meadows, and herb fields. Its main draw is the elevated view across Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, with broad mountain and coastal views on a clear day.
Parking for the Alex Knob Track is at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat carpark on the Franz Josef Glacier access road. If that lot is full, the main Franz Josef Glacier car park can be used, with a walk back along the public walking track to the Alex Knob trailhead. Car parking fees apply at Franz Josef Glacier from December 15, 2025.
Clear, stable weather gives the best chance of the big glacier views that make the Alex Knob Track worthwhile. DOC specifically advises starting early in summer to avoid afternoon cloud, which can hide Franz Josef Glacier and the surrounding peaks even when the lower part of the trail is still clear.
Alex Knob Track is generally the stronger choice for wide, elevated views over Franz Josef Glacier, while Roberts Point is known for getting closer to the glacier valley itself. Alex Knob is longer and harder at 16.47 km with 1,113 m of climbing, so the better option depends on whether the priority is a high panoramic viewpoint or a closer valley perspective.
