Loop
“A lush Azorean loop threads river shade, a mossy waterfall, and the revived hamlet of Sanguinho.”
This compact loop on São Miguel packs a lot into a short outing: a shaded river valley, a waterfall reached by a steady climb, and the restored hamlet of Sanguinho above Faial da Terra. Expect roughly 4 to 4.6 km / 2.5 to 2.9 miles overall, with about 200 m / 656 ft of ascent, which fits a medium rating despite the modest distance because the trail includes steep, damp sections and a slippery stone descent. Official and recent trail sources describe it as a circular walking route starting in Faial da Terra, with the route climbing from about 40 m to around 220 m elevation. (acores9.com)
The start is in Faial da Terra, Povoação, São Miguel, Azores, near the local bus stop and close to the Ponte do Outeiro / Rua Burguete area, which is the most useful landmark for drivers and anyone setting a route in HiiKER. One commonly used parking area is along Rua Burguete near Ponte do Outeiro, Faial da Terra, where roadside bays are available. By car, the usual approach is from Povoação via the EN1-1A, then turning down toward Faial da Terra near the Miradouro do Pôr-do-Sol. For public transport, Faial da Terra is served by São Miguel’s island bus network, so the practical plan is to travel first to Povoação and then continue to Faial da Terra on the local bus service, checking current timetables before setting out. The opening section follows the stream out of the village on an easy-to-follow marked path. Early on, the walking is pleasant rather than severe, with orchards on both sides of the water and dense, humid vegetation closing in as you move farther into the valley. After about 0.8 km / 0.5 miles, you reach a wooden bridge; after crossing, the route steepens and soon reaches a fork where the branch to Salto do Prego heads right. This first half of the walk is where the trail begins to feel more enclosed and subtropical, with constant moisture underfoot and plenty of roots, mud, and slick stone if it has rained recently. From the bridge to the waterfall, the trail becomes the most physically demanding part of the loop. The ascent is not long, but it is sharp enough to raise the effort level, especially in wet weather. Official route notes mention rope- and wood-edged sections in places, and the approach passes through thick stands of non-native woodland mixed with lush streamside growth. The waterfall itself is about 10 metres / 33 feet high, dropping into a pool enclosed by mossy rock walls. This is the main landmark of the hike and the point where many walkers pause longest. Rocks around the base can be extremely slick, so extra care is needed if you step off the main tread. (visitazores.com)
Vegetation is a major part of the character here. Sources for the route mention orchards, bamboo, mosses, Japanese cedar, Australian cheesewood, incense tree, and acacia along the trail corridor, creating a very green but often damp environment. The village name Sanguinho is tied to Frangula azorica, an endemic Azorean buckthorn once abundant in the area, so this is also a walk with some botanical interest beyond the waterfall itself. Birdlife can be subtle rather than dramatic, but the sheltered valley and mixed woodland make it a good place to watch and listen for common Azorean forest and farmland species. After visiting Salto do Prego, you retrace your steps to the junction and continue toward Sanguinho, the old hillside settlement above Faial da Terra. This section adds the historical dimension that makes the loop more than a simple waterfall walk. Sanguinho developed on a slope with no road access, and the surviving houses, walls, and small cultivated plots reflect a way of life once dependent on footpaths and small-scale farming.
