Parking is available near the start of the trail. For those opting for public transport, buses regularly run from Funchal to Ponta do Sol, from where you can catch a local taxi to the trailhead.

The Hike Itself

As you embark on your hike, the trail will lead you through a variety of landscapes, including lush forests and agricultural terraces. The path follows the Levada, an irrigation channel that is a testament to the ingenuity of Madeiran agriculture, dating back to the 16th century. These Levadas are historically significant as they were crucial in distributing water from the wetter north to the drier south of the island.

Flora and Fauna

The Levada Nova trail is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The area is rich in biodiversity, with a variety of endemic plants like the Madeira laurel, as well as a multitude of bird species, such as the Madeira firecrest, which is the smallest bird in Europe. Keep an eye out for the unique terraced landscapes, which are part of the island's cultural heritage.
