Out and Back
“A gentle forest ramble turns adventurous with hidden sandstone passages, bluff views, and two enchanting falls.”
This roughly 14 km / 8.7 mile outing in Pickett CCC Memorial State Park follows the Hidden Passage Trail to two of the area’s best waterfall side trips, Crystal Falls and Double Falls, with only about 200 m / 656 ft of total elevation gain spread across a mostly gentle route. Although the overall rating fits an easy hike, it is better thought of as easy-to-moderate in spots because the terrain includes short rocky climbs, uneven footing around sandstone shelves, and a creek crossing on the way to Double Falls. The trail system sits in and beside Pickett State Forest near Jamestown, Tennessee, with the main park address at 4605 Pickett Park Highway, Jamestown, TN 38556, which is the most useful landmark for reaching the start. The walk begins in shaded hardwood forest above Thompson Creek, where the first section is usually the calmest and most enclosed. After about 0.7 km / 0.45 mile from the trailhead, the route reaches the main loop junction, and from there the eastern leg leads toward the signature rockhouse terrain and the hidden passage itself. Around 0.9 km / 0.55 mile in, the trail threads through a narrow sandstone passage beneath fallen rock and over uneven stone, one of the most distinctive features of the hike. Very shortly afterward, at roughly 1.0 km / 0.6 mile, a short spur drops to Crystal Falls, which lies only about 90 m / 300 ft off the main trail. (cloudhiking.com)
Crystal Falls is the easier of the two waterfall visits and usually the first major landmark hikers reach. It sits in a sheltered setting beneath the sandstone, and the short detour makes it one of the best reward-to-effort stops on the route. After returning to the main trail, the path climbs onto bluff-top terrain with intermittent views into the Thompson Creek drainage. Expect stretches close to cliff edges and exposed sandstone, so even though the grade stays modest, careful foot placement matters. (cloudhiking.com)
Beyond Crystal Falls, the trail alternates between rockhouses, ravines, and more open forest. One of the notable viewpoints arrives around 1.9 km / 1.15 miles from the trailhead, where exposed sandstone gives a broad look over Thompson Creek. Farther on, the route crosses an old road cut and later passes beneath power lines at about 3.3 km / 2.05 miles. This eastern side of the loop is often the hottest part of the hike because several sources note reduced canopy from past beetle damage and fire, leaving long stretches with little shade. On warm days, that can make the hike feel harder than the elevation profile suggests, so carrying extra water is wise. (cloudhiking.com)
The turnoff for Double Falls comes at roughly 6.2 km / 3.85 miles from the trailhead. From there, the side trail descends toward a camping area near Thompson Creek, losing about 60 m / 200 ft in around 0.7 km / 0.45 mile before reaching the flats near the water. Just beyond the campsite, the route to the falls crosses Thompson Creek. In low water, hikers may find stepping stones or a dry-ish line; in higher water, the crossing can require fording and should be treated with caution. From the creek, Double Falls is about 0.5 km / 0.3 mile farther, or about 1.2 km / 0.75 mile one way from the Hidden Passage junction. (cloudhiking.com)
Double Falls is the more committing objective because of that descent-and-reclimb and the creek crossing, but it is also one of the most memorable features on the route. The waterfall sits in a wilder-feeling drainage, and the approach has more of a backcountry character than the quick Crystal Falls spur. After returning to the main trail, many hikers continue to Thompson Overlook at about 6.8 km / 4.2 miles from the trailhead, where the sandstone rim opens to a wider
