Out and Back
“A rugged gorge journey reveals cave-born cascades, mossy rockhouses, and a finale that feels wonderfully otherworldly.”
This route explores one of the most unusual waterfall landscapes on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, linking Big Laurel Falls, Sheep Cave Falls, and Virgin Falls on a rugged out-and-back with short side trips. Expect roughly 14 km / 8.7 miles overall, with about 300 m / 985 ft of elevation gain, though the effort feels bigger than the numbers suggest because the trail repeatedly drops into and climbs out of rocky gorge terrain. The hike is generally rated medium, but many hikers will find sections closer to moderately strenuous because of uneven footing, slick rock, creek crossings, and the long return climb. (tn.gov)
The walk begins at the Virgin Falls Trailhead at 2080 Scotts Gulf Road, Sparta, Tennessee 38583, in the Scott’s Gulf area of White County. From Sparta, the usual driving approach is to head east on US Highway 70 for about 11 miles, turn right onto Eastland Road, continue about 6 miles, then follow Scotts Gulf Road for about 2 miles to the parking area on the right. Parking is available at the trailhead. (tn.gov)
Public transport is very limited here. There is no practical regular transit service to the trailhead itself, so most hikers should plan to arrive by car or arrange a drop-off from Sparta or Crossville. If traveling without a car, the realistic option is to reach one of those towns first and then use a taxi or rideshare if available, but service can be sparse in this rural area. Because of that, self-driving is by far the simplest and most reliable approach. This is a remote trailhead, so it is wise to download your route in HiiKER before leaving town. (tn.gov)
From the parking area, the main trail is marked with white blazes and starts by descending through upland hardwood forest. Early on, the path meanders through oak-hickory and chestnut oak woodland before dropping deeper into the gorge. Around 2.0 to 2.2 km / 1.25 to 1.35 miles, you reach the area of Big Branch Falls, a wet-weather cascade just off the trail. Shortly after, at about 2.4 km / 1.5 miles, you come to the cable crossing at Big Laurel Creek, one of the route’s key decision points in wet conditions. If the creek is high or flooding, do not attempt the crossing. (tn.gov)
Big Laurel Falls arrives at about 3.8 km / 2.35 miles from the trailhead. This is one of the major landmarks of the day and a natural pause point before the route continues farther into the gorge system. The terrain here becomes more dramatic, with rockhouses, boulder fields, sink features, and increasingly lush vegetation. (tn.gov)
Farther on, the main trail reaches the Virgin Falls Loop junction at about 5.6 km / 3.5 miles, then the Sheep Cave junction at about 6.1 km / 3.8 miles. The side trip to Sheep Cave adds only a short distance—about 0.24 km / 0.15 miles total according to the state map—and is well worth it for hikers wanting to include Sheep Cave Falls and the cave area in the outing. After returning to the main trail, continue to the main Virgin Falls overlook at about 7.1 km / 4.4 miles from the start. (tn.gov)
Virgin Falls is the signature feature of the natural area: an underground stream emerges from a cave, drops about 34 m / 110 ft over the cliff, and then disappears into another cave at the bottom. It is one of the most distinctive hydrologic sights in Tennessee and gives the hike its real sense of destination. (tn.gov)
Although the mileage is manageable for many regular hikers, the trail is not smooth or fast. The state advises allowing roughly 5 to 9 hours for the hike, depending on pace and side trips. Rocky tread, roots, streamside mud, and steep sections can slow progress considerably, especially after rain. (tn.gov)
The biggest hazard is water. The cable crossing at Big Laurel Creek can become dangerous in high flow, and slick rock around the waterfalls can be treacherous even when the weather is dry. Waterproof footwear is useful in wet
