Out and Back
“A short, rocky grind through cool forest opens onto a breezy summit with sweeping Blue Ridge views.”
Expect a short, steep climb that packs a lot into a small distance: roughly 5 km / 3.1 mi round trip with about 400 m / 1,310 ft of elevation gain. The payoff is a big, open summit with wide views, but the grade and footing make it feel “Difficult” for many hikers—especially in heat, wind, or when the rocks are wet.
Nearest well-known start point: the Sharp Top Trailhead at the Sharp Top Store / Peaks of Otter Visitor Area, along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Bedford County, Virginia, near Peaks of Otter Lodge and Abbott Lake. If you plug “Sharp Top Trailhead” or “Sharp Top Store (Peaks of Otter)” into HiiKER, you’ll be routed to the correct parking area.
By car:
By public transport:
There isn’t reliable direct public transit to the Blue Ridge Parkway/Peaks of Otter complex. The most workable option is to take intercity bus/train to Roanoke or Lynchburg, then use a rideshare/taxi to the Peaks of Otter Visitor Area / Sharp Top Trailhead. Cell service can be inconsistent on the Parkway, so plan pickup/drop-off carefully and consider pre-scheduling.
The Sharp Top Return Trail is essentially a sustained ascent with very few “free” flat sections. Over 2.5 km / 1.55 mi to the summit you’ll gain most of the 400 m / 1,310 ft, so the average grade is punchy. You’ll notice:
If you’re using HiiKER for navigation, keep an eye on the return junctions—popular trails can develop side paths where people step off to pass or to find viewpoints.
Early on, the trail climbs through mixed Appalachian forest—hardwoods and mountain understory—before transitioning into more open, rocky terrain as you near the summit. The character changes noticeably as the trees thin:
Nearby, the Peaks of Otter area is known for Abbott Lake and the historic lodge setting, which makes this hike easy to pair with a lakeside walk or picnic after the climb.
This is classic Blue Ridge habitat. You’re likely to encounter signs of wildlife even if you don’t see animals directly.
Even though the distance is modest, the hike earns its reputation because the effort is concentrated:
