“Wander rolling woods to Fisher’s Point, where quiet coves and a big-water horizon invite reflection.”
This is a low-stress, mostly rolling woods-and-water walk on the public side of Lake Anna, linking together the park’s shoreline trails and the long, straight former rail-grade out to Fisher’s Point. At around 19 km (11.8 mi) with roughly 200 m (656 ft) of total climbing, it stays firmly in the Easy category for fit walkers—more about steady time on feet than steepness.
By car: Aim for Lake Anna State Park, 6800 Lawyers Rd, Spotsylvania, VA 22551 (park entrance/visitor area). (dcr.virginia.gov)
Most hikers start from the main day-use/visitor center side and use the park’s internal roads/parking areas to pick up the trail network that leads toward the peninsula and Fisher’s Point.
By public transport: There isn’t practical public transit directly into Lake Anna State Park. The closest “transit-like” option is typically getting to the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area (regional buses/rail to Fredericksburg), then using a rideshare/taxi for the final rural leg to 6800 Lawyers Rd. Plan on limited cell coverage in pockets and longer wait times for pickups once inside the park.
Expect packed dirt, pine needles, leaf litter, and some rooty sections, with short stretches that can turn muddy after rain—especially in low spots near coves and drainages feeding the lake. The overall elevation gain (~200 m / 656 ft) is usually delivered in small, frequent rollers rather than any sustained climb.
Because this hike is long for an “easy” rating, the main challenge is pace + hydration: - Budget 4–6 hours depending on stops and how much shoreline exploring you do. - Carry water; don’t assume you’ll find reliable potable sources on-trail. - In summer, heat and humidity around the lake can make an easy grade feel harder.
If you use a navigation app, keep it to HiiKER and download the route for offline use before you arrive—peninsulas and coves can make junctions feel deceptively similar.
Shoreline coves and long lake views: As you work toward Fisher’s Point, the forest repeatedly opens to water glimpses—quiet coves, finger inlets, and occasional broader views across Lake Anna. The point itself is the payoff: a peninsula tip feel with open sightlines and a “big water” horizon that’s especially nice in calmer weather.
The rail-grade character near the point: The approach to Fisher’s Point commonly uses the park’s well-known rail-trail corridor (often referred to as the Railroad Ford Trail in the park), which tends to be straighter and more gently graded than the rest of the woods trails—great for maintaining an even stride late in the day. Forest mix: You’ll move through classic central Virginia woodland—hardwoods mixed with pine—where the understory changes with moisture and season. In spring and early summer, expect more ticks and biting insects; in fall, leaf cover can hide roots and small rocks.
Lake Anna State Park sits on land once associated with gold mining, including the Goodwin (Goodwyn) Gold Mine, with gold discoveries in the area dating back to the early 1800s (often cited as 1829).
