Out and Back
“Stroll from Chippokes’ shaded plantation woods to the James River’s shell-strewn, history-echoing shore.”
This easy out-and-back is a flat, low-stress walk through the heart of Chippokes State Park—mixing shaded woods, open plantation edges, and a rewarding finish at the James River. At around 4 km (2.5 mi) round trip with roughly 0 m (0 ft) of climbing, it’s well-suited to families, casual walkers, and anyone wanting a short nature-and-history outing without hills.
Nearest known address / landmark for the trailhead area: Chippokes State Park, 695 Chippokes Park Rd, Surry, VA 23883 (park entrance and main day-use area). (chippokes.com)
Once inside the park, the College Run Trail is typically accessed from the main day-use / historic area near the visitor facilities and primary parking shown on the park map. (chippokes.com)
If you use a navigation app on-trail, rely on HiiKER to confirm the correct spur/turnaround points and to keep you on the College Run corridor where it intersects other park paths and roads.
Most of this route is gentle and straightforward, with a “park trail” feel rather than a rugged backcountry tread. You’ll be on a mix of compacted path and smoother surfaces typical of a heavily-used state-park trail, with short connectors near park roads and facilities in the historic core. Because the terrain is essentially flat, the main “effort” factors are sun/heat, humidity, and bugs, not elevation.
0.0–1.0 km (0.0–0.6 mi): Historic core to mixed woods You’ll start near the park’s central day-use/historic zone and ease into a corridor that alternates between lightly wooded sections and more open edges. This part is great for a warm-up and for orienting yourself—there are multiple park features nearby (museum/historic structures in the broader area), so it can feel like you’re walking through a living landscape rather than “just a trail.” Chippokes is known for its long agricultural history and preserved historic setting. (nps.gov)
1.0–2.0 km (0.6–1.25 mi): Toward the James River
As you continue, the character becomes more coastal-plain: flatter ground, taller trees in pockets, and a gradual sense of opening toward the river. The payoff is reaching a stretch of the James River shoreline that’s often described as resembling what early Jamestown-era explorers would have seen across the water. (nps.gov)
Turn around wherever your planned halfway point is (for a ~4 km / 2.5 mi total), or continue to the most obvious river access/viewpoint before returning the same way.
James River shoreline + “fossil beach” potential This is one of the most distinctive features of the walk. Along the river, you may notice light-colored sands and shell material typical of coastal-plain river edges. The area is known for abundant fossil shells—especially Chesapecten jeffersonius (Virginia’s state fossil)—and, with exceptional luck, even a fossilized megalodon tooth has been reported as a possibility.
