Out and Back
“A forest climb through Blue Ridge color leads to Overall Run Falls’ misty tiers—watch your footing.”
Overall Run Falls is one of Shenandoah National Park’s standout cascades, and this route makes a satisfying medium-effort outing: roughly 8 km / 5.0 mi with about 400 m / 1,300 ft of climbing. Expect a steady forest walk with a few rockier, more careful sections near the falls and along streamside tread.
Nearest well-known start point / landmark: the Thompson Hollow Trailhead area near the Mathews Arm / Overall Run side of Shenandoah National Park (north district). The most practical “known landmark” to navigate to is Mathews Arm Campground (Shenandoah National Park) on Skyline Drive; the Thompson Hollow access is in that vicinity.

By public transport (realistic options):
Public transit directly to Skyline Drive trailheads is limited. The most workable approach is:
From the trailhead, you’ll settle into a wooded climb and contouring traverse typical of Shenandoah’s north district: mixed hardwood forest (oak, hickory, tulip poplar) with seasonal understory—spring wildflowers, summer green tunnels, and vivid fall color.
0.0–2.0 km (0.0–1.2 mi): gradual warm-up with steady gain
The first stretch usually feels moderate rather than steep, letting you find a rhythm. The tread is generally dirt with leaf litter, but after rain it can be slick—especially where the trail crosses shallow drainages.
2.0–4.0 km (1.2–2.5 mi): more pronounced climbing toward the Overall Run drainage
This is where you’ll notice most of the day’s elevation gain accumulating. Expect occasional rocky footing and short steeper pitches. Keep an eye out for small side openings in the trees—subtle glimpses into the folds of the Blue Ridge.
4.0–5.0 km (2.5–3.1 mi): approach to the falls (rockier, wetter microclimate)
As you near Overall Run, the air often feels cooler and more humid. The sound of water becomes a reliable cue that you’re close. Footing can change quickly here: damp rocks, roots, and narrow tread demand slower steps.
Overall Run Falls is among the tallest waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park, dropping in multiple tiers. The viewing area can be uneven and slippery—especially if you’re tempted to step onto wet rock for a better angle.
If you’re hiking with kids or anyone uneasy on exposure, keep the group tight near the falls and avoid scrambling onto ledges.
On the way back, the same grades feel different: what was a steady climb becomes a knee-testing descent. Budget time for careful downhill foot placement, especially on any rocky pitches and rooty switchbacks. For an 8 km / 5 mi medium hike with stops at the falls, many parties take 3–4 hours, longer if the trail is wet or if you spend time photographing and exploring the stream corridor.
Shenandoah’s north district supports a classic Appalachian mix: - White-tailed deer are common along quieter stretches.
