Activity types
The Gower Way is 54.69 km long with 732 m of elevation gain, so it fits well as a 2 to 3 day walk for most hikers. Strong walkers sometimes complete it in a long single day, but the route is generally treated as a short multi-day trail across the Gower Peninsula from Rhossili to Penlle'r Castell.
The Gower Way runs across the Gower Peninsula between Rhossili on the southwest coast and Penlle'r Castell in upland north Gower. Rhossili is associated with Worm's Head and the coastguard lookout above Rhossili Bay, while Penlle'r Castell sits high above the Lliw Reservoirs on Mynydd y Gwair.
The Gower Way is generally rated easy, but that does not mean it is flat. Over 54.69 km it still climbs 732 m and crosses a mix of coast, farmland, limestone ground, heath, and upland sections, so it suits beginners with decent walking fitness more than complete first-timers with no long-distance experience.
Yes. At roughly 56 km end to end, the Gower Way is short enough to split into practical day stages, and many walkers break it into 2 or 3 sections. The route links very different parts of Gower, from the cliffs and beach scenery around Rhossili to inland farmland and the higher ground near Penlle'r Castell.
The Gower Way can be walked with a dog, but control matters because parts of Gower have grazing livestock and sensitive wildlife. Around Rhossili and the South Gower coast, dogs are generally welcome year-round, but leads are often the sensible choice on cliff paths, near sheep and ponies, and anywhere wildlife is present.
Rhossili is the most straightforward trailhead for parking. The main car park in Rhossili gives access to the cliff-top area above Rhossili Bay and Worm's Head, which is the best-known coastal end of the Gower Way. Swansea Council also notes bus access nearby, which helps with one-way walks.
Public transport is easiest at the Rhossili end of the Gower Way. Rhossili has a bus stop in the village near the main walking area, making it a practical start or finish for a one-way hike. The Penlle'r Castell end is more remote, so that side usually needs more planning for pickup, drop-off, or a taxi connection.
