“Explore Kitsap County's Lost Trail, a 7 km adventure blending scenic nature, history, and moderate hiking challenges.”
Starting your adventure near Kitsap County, Washington, the Lost Trail, Capitulate and Wormhole Loop offers a captivating 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) journey with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards Kitsap County and look for parking near the intersection of Seabeck Highway NW and Holly Road NW. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is at Seabeck Highway NW & Holly Road NW, serviced by Kitsap Transit. From there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through dense forest, offering a serene start to your hike. As you progress, you'll encounter a mix of well-trodden paths and narrower, more rugged sections. The first significant landmark is a small, picturesque creek about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) in, where you can take a moment to enjoy the tranquil sounds of flowing water.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for native flora such as Douglas fir, western red cedar, and salal bushes. Wildlife sightings may include black-tailed deer, various bird species like the Pacific wren, and occasionally, black bears. Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife and follow Leave No Trace principles.
This region holds historical significance dating back to the early 1900s when it was a logging area. Remnants of old logging equipment and rail tracks can still be seen along the trail, particularly around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark. These relics offer a glimpse into the area's industrial past and the hard lives of the loggers who once worked here.
Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) point, you'll reach the Capitulate section, characterized by a steep but short climb. This part of the trail offers panoramic views of the surrounding forest and, on clear days, distant mountain ranges. Use HiiKER to navigate this section as the path can be less defined.
The Wormhole Loop, which starts around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, is a fascinating part of the trail. Named for its winding, tunnel-like paths through dense underbrush, this section can be disorienting. Again, HiiKER will be invaluable for keeping you on track.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail are a gentle descent back to the trailhead. This section is less challenging and offers a relaxing end to your hike. You'll pass through a beautiful meadow, often filled with wildflowers in the spring and summer months.
Given the moderate difficulty, ensure you have sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and snacks. Weather can be unpredictable, so pack a rain jacket and layers. The trail can be muddy, especially after rain, so be prepared for slippery conditions.
By following these guidelines and using HiiKER for navigation, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy the Lost Trail, Capitulate and Wormhole Loop in all its natural and historical splendor.
