“Explore diverse landscapes and breathtaking views on the 20 km Spray Park Trail and Mowich Lake loop.”
Starting your adventure near Pierce County, Washington, the Spray Park Trail and Mowich Lake loop spans approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) with an elevation gain of around 1300 meters (4265 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a diverse range of landscapes, from lush forests to alpine meadows, and provides stunning views of Mount Rainier.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Mowich Lake, which is accessible via Mowich Lake Road. The nearest significant landmark is the town of Carbonado, Washington. From Carbonado, follow the Carbon River Road until it transitions into Mowich Lake Road. The road is unpaved for the last 27 kilometers (17 miles), so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended. Public transport options are limited, so driving is the most practical way to get there.
The trail begins at the Mowich Lake Campground, situated at an elevation of approximately 1500 meters (4921 feet). From here, you'll embark on a loop that takes you through some of the most picturesque scenery in Mount Rainier National Park.
Starting from Mowich Lake, the trail ascends gradually through dense forest. After about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), you'll reach the junction with the Spray Park Trail. Continue on this path, and you'll soon find yourself in a series of alpine meadows known as Spray Park. This section is particularly beautiful in late summer when wildflowers are in full bloom. Keep an eye out for marmots and black bears, which are commonly seen in this area.
Approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) into your hike, you'll encounter a side trail leading to Spray Falls. This detour is well worth the effort, as the falls cascade down a rocky cliff, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The falls are about 15 meters (50 feet) high and provide a perfect spot for a short break.
Continuing on the main trail, you'll begin a steeper ascent towards the ridge. This section is the most challenging part of the hike, with an elevation gain of about 400 meters (1312 feet) over 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). The effort is rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding valleys. On clear days, you can even see as far as the Olympic Mountains.
The area around Spray Park has a rich history. Native American tribes, including the Puyallup and Nisqually, used these trails for centuries for hunting and gathering. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region became popular with early mountaineers and explorers. The Mowich Lake area was once considered for development into a major resort, but these plans were abandoned, preserving its natural beauty.
The trail offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. In addition to marmots and black bears, you might spot deer, elk, and various bird species. The flora is equally impressive, with old-growth forests of Douglas fir and western red cedar giving way to alpine meadows filled with lupine, paintbrush, and avalanche lilies.
Given the trail's elevation and varying weather conditions, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Use HiiKER for accurate trail maps and real-time updates. Always carry sufficient water, snacks, and layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially during the steeper sections.
After reaching the ridge, the trail descends back towards Mowich Lake, completing the loop. The descent offers more stunning views and a chance to reflect on the diverse landscapes you've traversed. The entire loop can take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours, depending on your pace and the time spent at various landmarks.
This trail is a gem in Mount Rainier National Park, offering a mix of natural beauty, historical significance, and challenging terrain. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or someone looking to explore the great outdoors, the Spray Park Trail and Mowich Lake loop is an unforgettable experience.
