What to expect
Ventura County, California packs surf-worn bluffs, oak canyons, and big backcountry into one corner of the state. Follow the Backbone Trail above the Santa Monica Mountains, head into Point Mugu State Park for ocean views and steep ridges, or push up Pratt and Chumash trails near Ojai. Farther inland, the Sespe River Trail opens into a wilder landscape of chaparral, stone, and long, quiet miles.
